Well you should know that..
Knights and castles
..along with the pilgrims in the Holy Land grew many monastic - military orders which had castles and spedali. The most famous knights -monks' orders were those of the Temple, the Templars, born from the reunion of two medieval main ideals: the religious perfection search by the monastic life and the warrior's virtues.

These warrior monks had vows of chastity, poverty and obedience as other religious orders. Indeed they had the vow to defend the pilgrims in all the holy places of Christianity and especially in Jerusalem.
Right in Jerusalem they started their mission keeping hostels for pilgrims, sick and needed people. The Temple knights had their first shrine in the Salomon Temple from which they took their name. Another important order was that of the Saint John Knights of Jerusalem. Also called gerosolimitani their order too was born in Jerusalem, as their name remembers, and their aim was to take care of the pilgrims. The gerosolimitani, during the centuries, conquered Rodi's island, and afterwards that of Malta from which they took the name 'the Knights of Malta'. During the Middle Ages they were still known as Saint John Knights and they were spread all over our territories. They were the keepers of Poggibonsi's castle.

These military - monks' orders carried on the spidalis where the pilgrims and the sick ones were received, but mainly they carried on the castles. These castles were spread along those main roads where previously there were the ancient hostels of the Roman Empire, called mansiones, where the Empire's travellers used to rest, to change horses and find all they needed. But the castles had a character very different from that of the ancient hostels. These resting places were born and run under the ideals of Christian charity and faith, on the shape of the Evangelic Charity Activities. The hospitality was given freely to everybody, the material and spiritual caring were offered by these warriors - monks with the concern of a religious vocation's mission. Usually the castles, and that of Poggibonsi too, consisted of a small group of buildings surrounded by walls and made of three main clusters: a church, a monastery and a pilgrim's house.
